For anybody interested in astronomy

Microsoft's World Wide Telescope

This new software from Microsoft is an amazing product. Not only is it free, but it goes further than any other similar software has gone before.

It gives you that same feel as being in your garden on a clear night, that other software does not, but it goes further still. You have guided tours (you can even make your own and share them on the Internet with others), narration and images that are all combined into the one interface. Most of the information presented to you is relevant to the area of the sky you are looking at.

Cost of Penwortham Christmas Tree

I recently got an update from the penwortham town council with minutes from the local meetings.

One article discussed the spending on the Penwortham Christmas tree.

Apparently last year the Tree it 's self cost over £300, which I am not worried about, however, we paid a company over £700 to provide the lights for us and to maintain the tree. The council take payers pay for the electricity, so how much maintenance work was carried out that would make it cheaper than buying our own lights from Dobbies at top price.

Poker at the Tom Finney, Penwortham

The Tom Finney, is now holding a weekly poker evening.

Buy in is £10, there is no Rake. Blinds are about normal.

As the group is new, there are a few draw backs about playing here

No Poker tables (you play on the bear tables pushed together, so difficult to hide your cards)
Dog eared paper playing cards
They don't fully stick to the rules (i.e. They don't mind string betting, they don't mind saying call and then raise)

They do put on some free sandwiches.

Poker at the Red Lion in Longton

Although I have not been here myself, I have been told about it by the members of the Golden Ball poker group.

The Red Lion offer a cash game on Wednesdays. You buy in with as much as you want and are provided with chips to play with. You can cash out when ever you want.

Blinds are 25p for both small and large blind.

Poker at Rileys Preston

Rileys have two formats

£10 + £1 freezeout
£8 + £2 freezeout (King of Clubs)

At the the Preston Rileys the King of Clubs runs on Thursdays and Saturdays and the £10 freezeout runs on Fridays. They all start at 8PM

Poker at the Golden Ball

The Golden Ball Pub in Longton hosts a poker evening every Thursday starting at 8PM

The format is £10 Freeze Out

The regular group run a 12 week season. Each night an amount is taken from the pot (when I was there it was £15). This is put into a prize fund that builds up over the 12 weeks.

Points are awarded for your position at each of the 12 week sessions. The top six in the league get a final table to battle for the prize fund.

They are nice bunch of lads and some sadwiches are provided later in the evening.

Definatly worth trying out.

We need a Zebra Crossing on Birch Ave outside Sainsburys

Does anyone else think that a zebra crossing should be placed on Birch Ave. The new sainsburys attracts a lot more people traffic and their is a busy children's play ground across the road. I think it is would be sensible now to place a Zebra crossing here.

CPC fuels worries over petrol availability

I was disgusted to get a marketing email from CPC which was advertising petrol cans and portable petrol pumps to transfer petrol from one car to another.

The government and other motoring bodies have gone to great length to put the public's mind at rest over the availability of fuel. They have made the point that this weekends strike by tankers drivers will only effect 1 in 10 petrol stations. If people don't panic buy there is more than enough petrol for everyone.
